Triumph Sprint ST reliability/longevity

This survey was carried out in August 2004. The data does not include any problems due to recalls (apart from the fuel connectors which Triumph have just recently insued a recall for). A 'W' indicates that the problem was fixed under warranty.

- Fuel sender -> There are two wires coming out of the bottom of the fuel sender. Fuel starts to leak out where these wires come out of the sender. For the most part this seems to have been resolved from 2001 on.
- Fuel connectors -> The male quick disconnect fuel fittings break at the elbow. Triumph have recently issued a recall for these parts and claim the breakages are due to ham fisted mechanics. These fittings are also used on Ducati's and BMW's.
- Rear shock -> The damping in the Showa rear shock becomes inaffective. This seems to have been resolved from 2001 on.
- Oil consumption -> The Triumph service limit is 1qt/1000 miles. Some owners experienced what they thought was excessive oil consumption. Triumph claimed this was due to a bad breather valve and seal and replacing them helped.
- Radiator -> Some of the 1999 KTM made radiators had misaligned mounts that would cause them to develop a leak.
- Ignition wire short -> Some 1999 ST's had a misrouted ignition switch wire that caused wires to become cut.
- Mirrors -> The mirror joints are held together with a washer that has a serrated edge. If this comes off a few times the aluminium post wears away and the washer no longer grips.
- Front blinker lens -> They fall off.
